Dr. Turner, what is periodontics and why is it important to dental health? Periodontics involves the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases and oral inflammation. It also involves the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants. It’s important because our jawbone and gums are the foundation of optimum dental health. Excellent periodontal care benefits the functionality of our teeth and that includes our smile esthetics. More than 80 percent of adults are affected by some form of periodontal disease during their lifetime. Unfortunately, only a small percentage with moderate to severe gum disease pursue treatment, leading to unnecessary tooth loss.
Please summarize your credentials and formal education. I’m Board-Certified in Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery. I’m originally from Richmond, Virginia, and I completed my undergraduate and graduate studies at Old Dominion University. I earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery at VCU School of Dentistry, and afterward completed a 3-year surgical residency in Periodontics at VCU.
