In the Frame with Steve and Joni Boger – Editor’s Note: We spoke with Steve Boger, the owner of Englewood Art & Frame with his wife Joni. They have two stores located downtown at 443 W. Dearborn Street and in Tiffany Square at 2828 S. McCall Road. Please call 941-473-0801 or 941-475-9902.
Steve, tell us a little about your business and the services and products you provide?
We’ve been serving Englewood and the surrounding area since 1993 as the area’s only award-winning, certified and master picture framers. We have over 2,000 moulding samples to choose from and the convenience of two store locations.
What’s your history in the Englewood area?
We’ve lived in Englewood for 34 years and Joni and I raised our three children here.
Where are you originally from and what brought you here?
We are originally from the Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati area. We came to Florida after I was discharged from the U.S. Army where I worked as a cartographer (map maker).
What other work experiences did you and Joni have previously?
Prior to starting our framing business, Joni worked in the medical field and I worked in the construction industry.
What type of frames are more popular – wood frames or more modern styles?
Our most popular frame styles are our Barn Siding (see photo) and distressed frames. They look great in homes and businesses using the popular coastal design themes.
You and Joni enjoy traveling. What are some of the places you have visited?
Being married for 40 years with three children and four grandchildren gives us a good reason to travel around the U.S. We have also traveled extensively in the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of South America. We recently visited Cuba.
Steve, what do you enjoy most about your business?
In addition to working for ourselves, we enjoy interacting with our customers and tackling some of their challenging framing projects. One project that comes to mind is framing seashells. The solution was using a shadow box to provide depth for the shells (see sample photo). Most customers pick out the background color and frame style and leave the design to us.
Testimonial from local artist Suzanne Canner:
Steve is a framer second to none. I believe his exquisite framing of three of my paintings were instrumental in their being juried into three prestigious exhibits. One of the paintings Steve framed hangs in the Dennos Museum in Michigan.
